SHOT Show 2017

For those of you that don't know what the SHOT Show is, it is the Shooting, Hunting, and Outdoor Trade Show. It is the biggest event in the gun industry and I had the opportunity to attend again this year. The SHOT Show is where all of the new products for 2017 get released and it gives us a chance to meet with people we talk to on the phone and email all year long. What this means for you though, is that we get orders in for the coolest new products and sometimes we get special deals that we pass on to you. Some of those items, but not all are listed below-
  • Magpul X22 Backpacker Stock for the Ruger 10/22 Takedown
  • Colt Combat Unit Carbine
  • Colt Cobra Revolver
  • Trijicon MRO Patrol
  • Hudson Mfg H9
  • CZ P10c
Because of all the orders we placed at the show, we are stocked up on a lot of firearms and accessories now. We appologize for our shelves being bare for a bit but we are fully stocked on Slip 2000, Bladetech, AR small parts, AR accessories, Glock handguns, S&W handguns, Ruger handguns, and we are stocking a small amount of Taurus firearms again. We have orders from Blackhills Ammunition, Crimson Trace, Surefire, and Gun Storage Solutions on the way as well. Look for us to carry some new products in 2017. We'll post in the newsletter and on Facebook when these new items make their appearance.

GUN LAWS

The following Arizona pro-rights bills are scheduled for committee hearings in the coming week.

HB2318, which would require a conviction of a crime before a concealed weapons permit can be revoked, is scheduled for a hearing in the House Judiciary & Public Safety committee on Feb 1.

SB1243, would exempt CCW permit holders from disarming in public (state & local gov't controlled) buildings or events that do not screen everyone entering for weapons, is scheduled for a hearing in the Senate Government committee on Feb 1.

HB2216, which would make it illegal to track firearms or their owners via electronic systems, databases, etc., passed out of the House Judiciary & Public Safety committee on Jan 25.

HB2287, which would change the language regarding the culpable mental state required to prove a person unlawfully discharged a firearm, also passed out of the House Judiciary & Public Safety committee on Jan 25.

GUN OF THE MONTH

Browning HiPower 9mm Vector Arms Import

The Browning Hi Power is a single action, semi-automatic handgun available in 9mm and .40 S&W calibers. It is based on a design by American firearms inventor John Browning, and completed by Dieudonné Saive at Fabrique Nationale (FN) of Herstal, Belgium. Browning died in 1926, several years before the design was finalized. The Hi-Power is one of the most widely used military pistols in history, having been used by the armed forces of over 50 countries.

This Hi Power is made in Belgium and imported by Vector Arms in 1994. It is similar to a GP Capitan but has a proprietary stock notch cut into the frame to accept a Vector Arms shoulder stock. Since it's a mid 90's build, it has the newer Harder Cast Frame and a larger, stronger sear and firing mechanism.

TECH

In last month's newsletter we started to wade into the vast jungle of AR manufacturers and make sense of what we encountered. We had ended with a list of what we refer to as "Tier 1" guns.

"Tier 1" rifles are the highest quality rifles on the market in the AR world. Why are they the best quality you might ask? Excellence in the firearms world comes from the quality of the materials used in manufacturing, the tolerances those materials are manufactured to, the finish applied to those materials, the quality of the labor used in assembling/manufacturing the firearm, and the quality control measures used to ensure all of the previous items indeed meet the standards of the manufacturer.

One of the ways "Tier 1" companies differentiate themselves from lesser quality companies is in their testing of each individual component of the rifle. Some companies just do "batch testing". Say they get in 1,000 bolts. They might test 10 bolts and if they pass all 1,000 pass. "Tier 1" companies will test every single one of the 1,000 bolts to ensure that they all meet their standards. If 1 fails, guess what? They all fail and the entire lot gets rejected.

Most "Tier 1" guns share a list of the same components. Forged 7075 T6 Hard Coat anodized  receivers, "Mil-Spec" receiver extensions, MPI'd bolts made from Carpenter 158 steel, & barrels made from 11595E steel (CMV) with a 1:7 barrel twist rate and 5.56 chambers that are High Pressure Tested (HPT) and Magnetic Particle Inspected (MPI). These components are often referred to as "Mil-Spec" as these parts are listed in the Technical Data Package (TDP) that Colt uses for their M4's built for the US Government. This TDP was mistakenly open sourced by the US Government in 1996. So this information is out there for every AR manufacturer to obtain and use. Ask yourself, why doesn't every company use it?

Next month we'll be back with more info!

To be continued.....
