GUN LAWS
The following Arizona pro-rights bills are still in process- http://www.azcdl.org/html/bill_tracking.html SB1344, would clarify that state and local governments cannot regulate the possession of weapons by employees or contractors in or on property or vehicles owned by the employee or contractor, is scheduled for a House Commitee on the Whole hearing in the coming weeks.
HB2216, which would make it illegal to track firearms or their owners via electronic systems, databases, etc., passed out of the Senate Government Committee on March 15th.
HB2022, would exempt from the definition of unlawful discharge "within or into the limits of any municipality" (a class 6 felony), the use of .22 caliber (or less) rat shot or snake shot, passed out of the Senate Government Committee on March 1st. | |
GUN OF THE MONTH  Colt Delta Elite 10mm (Manufactured in 1993)
History
The Delta Elite is credited as being the first firearm produced by a major manufacturer to chamber the 10mm. The ill-fated Bren Ten sparked a genuine interest in the 10mm round with outdoorsmen and as a defense round. The pistol was dropped from production in 1996 due to lackluster sales and the availability of smaller pistols with higher magazine capacities chambered in .40 S&W. Colt announced the re-introduction of the Delta Elite at the 2008 SHOT Show. This new generation is generally similar to the previous version. The "new" Delta Elites will be manufactured with the traditional barrel/bushing arrangement. Colt Customer Service stated they had a lack of acceptable accuracy problem with the "bull" bushingless barrel setup. That was the cause of the delay in the Delta Elite's production schedule. The new Delta Elite pistol was released March 31, 2009. Design The Delta Elite is a standard M1911 design, with a few minor differences from the latest Series 80 derivative of that pistol. It carries the rowel "Commander" type hammer of that pistol and the same overall features of the 1911 that have made it so popular with users. However, the Delta Elite carries a stiffer double recoil spring to handle the increased recoil of the 10mm round. Unlike the .400 Corbon, the 10mm can easily exceed the pressure levels of the .357 Magnum, thus stressing the original design's limitations, unless care is given. Many gunsmiths have their own modifications which they feel adjust the level of felt recoil of the Delta Elite. Some of the very first Delta Elites had a tendency to suffer flex-induced slide rail stress cracks. This was quickly addressed by removing the section of the rail above the slide-stop cutout.

This month we are continuing on with our AR-15 series and talking about chambers and twist rate.
When buying an AR-15 you'll notice there are a few different chamberings out there. The main types you'll find are .223, .223 Wylde, and 5.56. The .223 is a SAAMI spec that was originally intended for bolt action rifles, the 5.56 is a NATO spec and has a longer leade than .223, and the .223 Wylde is in between the two. Wylde was designed as a compromise between the other two chamber sizes.
Leade is the portion of the barrel ahead of the chamber where the rifling has been conically removed to allow room for the seated bullet. A shorter leade increases chamber pressure. Now military ammunition like the NATO 5.56 is loaded to a higher pressure than .223. Combine this higher pressure with the shorter leade of the .223 chamber and the chamber pressure can exceed the maximum amount the barrel and receiver can handle. If you remember last month's tech article where we mentioned the material barrels and bolt groups are made out of, weaker material can't handle the higher pressures that may occur. 5.56 chambers are also more reliable in feeding and extracting a variety of ammunition types. All of the "Tier 1" manufacturers we have talked about all use 5.56 chambers. A few dollars extra spent on better materials may be the difference between a safe range session and a trip to the hospital. Again, the purpose of your rifle will dictate what chamber you are comfortable using.
Going back to the quality costs more money idea, A chamber reamer will only ream so many chambers before it is worn out and not useful anymore. When the reamer is new it cuts to a true specification. As it gets worn from cutting multiple chambers, the overall dimension changes. So there can be minute variations in chamber size through a manufacturers barrels. "Tier 1" manufacturers might cut a fewer number of barrels per reamer so their tolerances do not exceed the specifications they are using. Yet one more reason why higher quality rifles cost a bit more money.
We get asked a lot about barrel twist rates. The most common current twist rates are 1:7, 1:8, & 1:9. The first number is one full revolution of the bullet and the second number is how many inches it takes to make that full revolution. Faster twist rates (1:7) stabilize heavier bullets better. Slower twist rates (1:9) stabilize lighter bullets better. The great thing about a 1:7 twist rate is that it stabilizes every bullet weight decently. This is why every "Tier 1" manufacturer uses a 1:7 twist rate on their barrels. Just like chamber size, one is ok, one is better and the other is in between.
If you look at some Tier 2 rifles, most of them will have the "in-between" option. .223 Wylde chambers & 1:8 twists. They work and help keep the costs down the the overall price is more affordable to the average shooter. But the Gold Standard is still a 5.56 chamber and a 1:7 twist rate.
