ORBAT - NATO's Northern Army Group, 1 BR Corps Deployment






The 1 Br Corps deployment zone sits between Hanover in the North to Einbeck in the South. Deployed to the North is 1 GE Corps and to the South covering the more broken terrain of the Harz Mountains and the Saurland is 1 Be Corps.  The detail of NORTHAGs deployment was previously covered here.

The Corps area is dissected by the Rivers Weser and Leine and has the Harz mountains on its Southern boundary and the Teutoburger Wald to its rear.  The city of Hieldesheim sits in the center of the Corps area of responsibility with the ground to the south of Hieldesheim being more broken and to the North more open.  The Corps sits astride an Axis of Advance to the Ruhr industrial conurbation.

The Corps concept of operations saw a covering force fighting a delaying action from the Inner German Border back to a Main Defensive Position that sat forward of the River Weser and across the River Leine.  The covering force battle would buy time for the preparation of the MDP and potentially the deployment of units from the UK if this had not happened in transition to war.  To the rear was the reserve Division with the primary task of launching a counterstroke into the advancing Soviet Armies once the main axis of advance had been identified and this would create the conditions for a counter offensive by the NORTHAG reserve to restore the Inner German Border.


  • The Covering Force was provided by 2 Armoured Reconnaissance Regiments from 1 and 4 Divisions together with 644 Squadron AAC.  The Recce Regiments at this time were 1st The Queens Dragoon Guards and The 16/5th Queens Royal Lancers. They were effectivly under command 1 Br Corps in this phase.
  • The Northern MDP Division was provided by 1st Armoured Division covering the more open ground South of Hanover and North of Hildershiem.
  • The Southern MDP Division was provided by 4th Armoured Division deployed in the Southern part of the corps area covering the more broken around the Sibbessa gap.  
  • The Parachute Regiment Group deployed to Hildershiem in the centre of the area and I would imagine they intended to stay put regardless of the developing situation.  Hildersheim and the Parachute Regiment Group came under command of 1st Armoured Division.
  • Corps Reserve was provided by 3rd Armoured Division. The corps reserve supplied its reserve Brigade to enable the withdrawal of the covering force through the main defensive position by securing crossing points over the Rivers forward of the Leine.  Once the covering force had withdrawn 3rd Division's reserve Brigade would join the rest of the Division West of the Weser and launch its counter stroke.
  • The Corps Rear area was secured by 2nd Infantry Division, which also included 24 Airmobile Brigade which would primarily be used for counter penetration tasks into the forward areas and could be deployed in support of either the MDP or Covering Force Battle. Of Interest during Ex Lionheart in 1984, the German 53 Heimatschutz Brigade reinforced 2nd Division and 24 Brigade (at the time a Mech (W) Brigade) was released for deployment else where.
  • The Rear Combat Zone and Communication Zone sat behind the Corps rear boundary.



Behind the forward deployed Corps of NORTHAG sat III US Corps, once it had completed its deployment from the US it would conduct subsequent operations to restore the line of the Inner German Border.


By the close of the Cold War NORTHAG reserve included a multinational Airmobile division that included:
  • UK 24 Airmobile Brigade
  • Ge 255 Luftlande Brigade
  • Be Para Commando Regiment
Over the duration of the Cold War I suspect this plan changed a number of times but this is what I intend to use as the operational context for games involving my British forces.

The Essentials of the 1 BR Corps plan were therefore:
  • Covering Force - Recce and 644 Squadron AAC Forward
  • Main Defensive Position Battle including Divisional Covering Force and Divisional counter attacks/penetration.
  • Counter Penetration by 24 Brigade (88/89) after formation of Brigade and prior to move to multinational Airmobile Division.
  • Counter Stroke - 7 Panzer Division & 3rd Armoured Division
The unifying purpose being to achieve the destruction of the first operational echelon between the R Weser and the R Leine.
    UK based components would deploy during transition to war or in the opening stages of the conflict, these included.
    • 3rd Armoured Divisions Recce Regiment
    • 4th Armoured Divisions 19 Infantry Bde
    • 665 Sqn AAC
    • 2nd Infantry Division



    My intent is to set a number of Scenarios within the 4th Armoured Divisions area of responsibility primarily as it had a slightly more diverse force structure than 1 Armoured Division deployed in the more open ground to the North and therefore holds a little more variety in the type of actions and forces that can be used.  19 Brigades deployment area around Bockenem is shown on the map below.



    The Divisions were tailored in their task organisation to their areas of responsibility. The 4th Armoured Division included 2 Armoured Brigades and an Infantry Brigade.  The table below outlines exactly what this meant in terms of the detailed composition of the different divisions in 1 Br Corps.


    So essentially the 4th Armoured Division was a Mechanised Division with 1 Mech (T) Brigade, 1 Mech (W) Brigade and an Armoured Brigade.  The organisation of the 4th Armoured Division was as follows:


    The Unit composition and equipment distribution of the Combat and Combat Support units around 1988/89 were as follows:

  • 16/5th Queens Royal Lancers, Divisional Recce Regiment (CVR(T))
  • 4 Regiment Army Air Corps (Lynx/Gazelle)
  • 45 Field Regiment RA (FH70) 19 Bde (Assumed)
  • 26 Field Regiment RA (M109/Javelin) 11 Bde
  • 49 Field Regiment RA (M109) 20 Bde
  • 35 Regiment Royal Engineers (FV 432)
  • 11 Armoured Brigade; 

  • 5th Inniskilling Dragoon Guards (Chieftain) 
  • 3 Royal Anglian (FV 432)
  • 2 Queens (FV 432)

  • 20 Armoured Brigade; 

  • 15/19 Hussars (Challenger)
  • 4/7th Royal Dragoon Guards (Challenger)
  • 1 Royal Regiment of Wales (FV 432) replaced by 1 RIRISH in 1990 (Warrior)

  • 19 Armoured Brigade; 

  • 1 Kings Own Scottish Borderers, (Saxon)
  • 2 Royal Anglian, (Saxon)
  • 1 Staffords, (Saxon) 
  • Royal Hussars (Chieftain, Less 1 Sqn to UKMF)

  • Engineers and artillery would tend to be attached to the brigades, recce squadrons could be attached to brigades but tended to operate as a divisional asset along with the AAC Regiment. Additionally the division would have a squadron from 32 Armoured Engineer Regiment with troops being attached to brigades as required.


    The Divisions operational concept had the Armoured Brigade and the Armoured Recce Regiment deployed forward as a covering force. The Armoured Recce Regiment being initially under command of 1 Br Corps as a component of the Corps covering force.  The 2 Mechanised Brigades then developed and manned the Main Defensive Position with the covering force withdrawing back into reserve where it would be reconstituted by replacement crews and vehicles from the Armoured Delivery Regiment. The AAC regiment would take a very active role in counter penetration as the ground lent itself well to HELARM anti tank ambushes. I expect it would have been active in both the divisions covering force battle and the MDP battles.



    19 Brigade the Mech (W) Brigade would deploy in the North of the area around the Bockenem bowel at the entrance to the Sibbessa gap and 11 Brigade, the Mech (T) Brigade to the South around Bad Gandershiem and Seesen20 Brigade would provide both the covering force and the reserve.

    Save Shenmue - Video Games Of The Past

    Hey everyone!

    (Sorry for my absence once again. I'll tell you all about it in another post soon. Let me tell you, though, wearing a knee brace is not fun.)

    Does anyone remember a game called Shenmue?

    (Wanted to get all of my Shenmue stuff in the picture.. couldn't find my Dreamcast Shenmue II case. Agh. )


    It was released for the Dreamcast in 2000 in North America (a year earlier in Japan) and was probably the best experience I've had with any video game in my life so far.

    It was my first experience with a more open world type game, exploring the streets of Japan as Ryo Hazuki, a young man determined to get revenge against the man that murders his father. It was an amazing game, and a second game was created for the series, which was also released on Dreamcast, and then later on the Xbox.

    Unfortunately, the third game for the series was never created, leaving the game on a cliffhanger.

    And now, more than ten year later, fans of the series have started doing whatever they can to make their voices heard. They we want a final Shenmue game. Today, tons of people are on twitter, using the hashtag #SaveShenmue and sending their pleas to Sony, Sega, Microsoft, and even Nintendo. Maybe it won't help Shenmue III get created, but it certainly doesn't hurt to try.

    So if you ever played Shenmue and enjoyed it, be sure to join the tons of other voices on Twitter asking for the next game. Maybe together we can convince the game companies that there are tons of potential customers for this game.

    Personally, I would even buy a system I don't have yet to play it on. That game would be a system seller for quite a few people, from what I've seen, me included.

    Shenmue means the world to me, as it is the most influential game I have ever experienced. I was only about 9 when I played it, and there were a few things I didn't understand (like combos for different fighting moves) but the world of Shenmue drew me in anyway, and never really let me go. Whether I was fighting thugs, or driving a forklift around at my daily job, or even just buying little toys from a capsule machine for my collection, I had fun doing it all.

    Shenmue was a game that made me realize just how much was possible for gaming. Even though I had played plenty of video games before Shenmue, I'm certain that this was the game that started my huge love of everything gaming-related. In many ways, it is the most important game to me, even though I haven't played it in far too long.

    Which is why I'm willing to try as hard as I can to let people know about this amazing game, and to tell gaming companies that there is an audience for this game if they decide to create it.

    Solarus 1.6 Is Out, Progress On Ocean's Heart


    Some of you might remember previous coverage of Solarus, the Free Software Zelda-like ARPG engine that comes with its own complete game creation suite and a pretty impressive palette of Zelda fan games already available under its wing. As of last December, version 1.6 has been released, and while the changes under the hood are too many to number (check the full announcement and changelog here), it is worth highlighting the package now includes a more varied amount of libre tilesets, meaning developers now have available a wider choice of default non-proprietary graphics to use on their own creations. While the community is still very much focused around Zelda fan-games and their respective copyrighted graphics, this is an important first step to attract more developers and spark future libre game projects.

    The Ocean's Heart tileset, now part of the Solarus package.

    One such project is Ocean's Heart, the brainchild of Solarus community member Max Mraz. The game follows a gameplay structure similar to classic Zelda games transported to a Viking age-inspired setting. It features an entirely original story and a beautiful pixelated tileset, which Max was kind enough to license under a Creative Commons license for integration with the Solarus suite. Upon completion it will become the first true libre Solarus-made ARPG in code and assets, which makes for very exciting news.

    The Web site, Soviet Armed Forces 1945 - 1991 offers a view of the Soviet Armed Forces from 1945 to 1991 for a range of Soviet Armed Forces.  Under each of the force areas it organises its data to look at the various sub components and provide an overview of the source material used, most of this would appear to be Russian.  The principal areas of the armed forces covered are:
    So under Air Force it lists all the Soviet Air Armies and under each lists the units under command and their locations.  Likewise for the Army it lists the Armies although organisational information is not currently available for all, it is for a majority. The information is organised from a number of perspectives  and the site provides a number of ways to traverse the data and find the information being sought. Views are provided for each of the principal arms of service so you can also review by Tank Divisions, Motor Rifle Division, Fortified Areas orArtillery Divisions amongst others or you can drill down through the isted armies.  

    For the Army a range of sources are quoted the site data seems heavily underpinned by a number of Feskovs works and CFE data.  Information provided includes activation and deactivation dates, base locations and major equipments where available.  Much of this is CFE data so drawn from the back end of the Cold War. The more traditional Orbat,  which units belonged to which divisions covers the whole of the period specified, at least for the Army. The Site scope is broad and  is still a work in progress.

    Having tried to translate with google a number of the reference documents some one trying too publish this data in english is a bit of a godsend. It will be interesting to see how the site develops but it is already looking like a bit of a treasure trove.

    Hunting Sasquatch

    Personal History:
    In recent years my mother has come to believe that there is a very good possibility that Sasquatches exist. This is occasionally a source of good-natured ribbing during family gatherings, and the sasquatch has cemented itself firmly into family in-joke country. Recently I had the opportunity to try a review sample of the upcoming game "Hunting Sasquatch", and while I knew nothing about the gameplay I knew I had to try it out just based on theme alone.

    Condition:
    As I always caution this is a pre-production review sample, so what you see here in the photos is not what the final product will look like. Indeed much of the artwork has yet to be finished, anything that appears as a dark silhouette of an image is actually placeholder art. I've also been told that some of the iconography is in the process of being changed.


    Gameplay:
    Each player takes a "Hunter" card. Hunter cards indicate the type of hunter the player is, as well as that hunter's special abilities and their "Doomed" color, which becomes important when exploring new areas. There are a number of different hunter types in this game, each with different abilities and doomed colors.


    At the start of a player's turn he must choose a "Location" card. As the game progresses Location cards will be placed in piles, the number of which scales with the number of players (the photos in this review will reflect a two player game). If there are already visible location cards on the piles a player may choose to select one of these. If there are no visible locations, or if the player does not like his current choices, he may draw a location card from the deck, place it on the smaller of the location piles, and then "encounter" it.


    Encountering a location involves comparing your hunter card's Doomed color with the Doomed Hunter color on the location card. If a hunter explores a location which shares his Doomed color then that hunter dies and the player's turn is over. Any Location card which is taken from the deck must immediately be encountered. Players also encounter cards they choose to visit from the location piles, however players will know what the Doomed color is in advance and can avoid locations that will kill them.


    Once a player has chosen a location and survived the encounter with it his next task is to gather the Hunter Dice and attempt to roll that location's Victory condition. In order to successfully inspect a location and hopefully gather some evidence of Sasquatch's existence the player must roll the collection of die faces printed on the right of the card. The player decides how many of the eight hunter dice he'd like to roll, placing extras aside and then rolling the rest.


    If the player is holding any "anti-"tokens from previous turns he must discard any die which matches each token, along with the token, placing them aside with the unrolled dice. Then, the player may activate any special ability  their hunter card allows. Dice are then applied to the location card, first to the "Death" column, and then to the "Victory" column. If at any time the Death column fills up the hunter has died and the turn is over.


    If after the first roll the player does not have the results needed to fill the Victory column, he may attempt to roll again. The player rolls the "Fate" die to. If he rolls the horseshoe symbol then he may roll any unused hunter dice again, minus those lost to tokens or unrolled during the first attempt. If the player receieves a trap symbol on the fate die his turn is over and he recieves the "Trap" consequences printed on the location card. This usually involves receiving one or more "anti-tokens" and sometimes losing a turn. Some traps can also give a player horseshoe and lightbulb tokens which have positive effects.


    If the player is unable to fill the Victory column after the second roll then his turn is over and he recieves the Trap consequences. If he is successful then he takes the location card. If this location has an evidence symbol on it that he has not recieved before then he also takes the corresponding evidence token.



    If a player dies, either from encountering a location or rolling all of the dice on a location's death column, he immediately discards his hunter card, as well as all anti-tokens attached to it. He then draws a new hunter card for his next turn.

    Play continues this way until one off two win conditions have been met. First, if any player collects all six types of evidence the game ends. Second, if a specific number of hunter cards are in the discad pile, a number which scales with the number of players, the game ends. Players then add up the value of their captured location cards, plus two points for every unique evidence token in their posession. The player with the highest total is the winner.


    So How Is It:?
    I played this with my wife, and she is a pretty picky gamer. At the end of the game she had a generally positive opinion of it, and that's a sort of success on its own. This game is easy to grasp, in part because you can start teaching it by saying "It's kind of like Yahtzee, but...". While there are certainly plenty of differences the basic idea of rolling and applying dice is recognizable and an easy sell, making this I think a very good game for families and casual gamers. We had a good time, groaning with our losses and happy with our victories. It moves pretty quickly, and I found that the player powers definitely steer your decision making, which is great.


    The game can get a little frustrating, especially if you are trying to get a specific kind of evidence chip. Locations seem designed to dissuade you from attempting them a second time. If you get a trap at a location the penalty anti-token(s) are usually the same symbols as that location's victory conditions. This means capturing the location you wanted has just become even harder, and if the other visible locations share your Doomed color or give chips you already have it leaves you in the crappy position of either probably losing again or having to blind draw a card that might kill you or cover up the location you want. I guess that's party of the game's strategy, but at times certain elements just felt in the way. I especially am not a fan of the "Doomed" color element, and am unsure of its purpose other than to shorten game length somewhat.


    While much of the artwork is unfinished in the copy I received, the art which is completed is wonderful. It's a clean, cartoony style which echoes the general lightness of the game perfectly. Every character is unique and charming in its own way. Each location card features a real location and a mythical creature of some kind that is supposed to live there, making the game also a sort of cryptozoic glossary. Each piece of artwork on the location cards has a little scene which includes that location's creature as well as the Sasquatch and usually some hunters doing something.


    My biggest source of confusion with the artwork is on the box cover, where Sasquatch is almost fully dressed such that he pretty much just looks like some large bearded guy. If the game is called "Hunting Sasquatch" I'd expect a large, obvious picture of Sasquatch on the cover, not a lumberjack that, after careful consideration is PROBABLY Sasquatch. In fact several mythical creatures appear on the box art and Sasquatch is absolutely the least recognizable one. Were I in charge of that decision (and I'm not) I'd absolutely strip that squatch down.



    Final Verdict:
    This is a cute, light dice-roller that is easily taught and plays pretty quickly. If you like games like "Dungeon Roll" then you're likely to enjoy this game as well, and when the artwork is completed I bet it's going to look pretty slick. It scores a "Good" 4/5.

    Improving Hexagon Map Storage Diagram

    Last week, I decided to improve the map storage section of the hexagon guide. This section had a diagram that suggested the use of a 2D array, but then it presented formulas that didn't look like what was shown. Reader feedback made me realize this section was confusing. I was mixing two separate steps here.

    1. Store the map in a 2D array.
    2. Slide the rows to the left to save space.

    The diagram showed step 1 but not step 2. The formula under the visualization showed step 2. Mismatch!

    I think it's worth having two separate diagrams here. I couldn't figure out where to place the second diagram in the page layout, so I decided to instead make the one diagram animate between the two different approaches.

    One of the advantages of writing text over making videos is that I can treat it as a "living document" that improves over time. The improvements are less frequent the longer the document has been around, but I am still updating the pages I wrote in the 1990s, and I intend to continue improving the new ones too.
